Before I even get in the house
I can hear
the bird calling
the dog whining
a television

Once I'm in the house
I can hear
the bird calling
the dogs nails tapping on the floor
a television


When I sit down to work
I can hear
the bird calling
the dog scratching
a television
Manda and Colleen laughing in their room
Shawn playing his guitar
the fridge
the pump
a drippy faucet
the cat purring
a clock ticking
my computer fans

When I lay down to sleep
I can hear
the bird making quiet noises
the dog snoring
a television
