Garage door

The Author of this post is Solomon Dejesus

Our garage door has finally bit the dust. It had been on its last leg for a long time. I am thinking that it is around twenty years old. I remember when we first moved into our house. I was so excited to have a garage door opener. Our old house never had one, and we always had to stop the car, get out, pull the door up, get back in the car and drive into the garage. Then you still had to close it by hand after you got out. What a hassle that was especially when my kids were little. As they got older, I could get one of them to hop out of the car and open it for me. So to say I was excited about the garage door opener at our new house would be an understatement. Since I had never purchased a new garage door opener, I went online with our clear wireless internet service to find a reasonable company that could come out and install a new one as soon as possible. Heaven forbid that I would have to go back to the old days when I had to open the garage door myself. Besides, I am twenty years older and am no longer a spring chicken.

The LG Double Play - A Super Gift...

This post brought to you by LG DoublePlay™. All opinions are 100% mine.

Check out the LG Double play!

LG DoublePlay™

Available exclusively at T-Mobile!

This super phone has two fully customizable touch screens. Each screen operates independently of the other or together. The main display measures 3.5" and the sub screen measures 2". The Double Play also offers a full QWERTY keyboard and Swype for quick and simple text input. What does all this mean? It means that one can do many things at once! I could update my Facebook status, text, check email or surf the web, all simultaneously!

I text a lot, sometimes more than I make or take calls. My phone doesn't have a keyboard, just the number pad, so I often send some confusing messages to people. I also spend about an hour each day posting to Facebook from my phone.  But the camera on my phone is crappy and it doesn't have video. I would love to be able to take a decent picture or vid and post it directly to Facebook. The LG Double Play would really make these things so much easier and streamlined.

Another really cool feature is the 5 megapixel camera with LED flash and the 720p HD video recorder. With these, I can take pics and videos and share them through email, by text or post them to Facebook too. The LG Double Play also offers multiple messaging options such as Cloud Text or Group Text. This feature gives users the option of sending and receiving texts from a tablet or PC and to create group chats on the go enabling even faster and more efficient content sharing.

This phone is quite amazing! LG Double Play features Android and access to the Android Market  delivering user customization. with seven home screens and nine touch screen shortcuts, one touch navigation is at your fingertips!

How many texts do you send in a day? How often do you spend posting to FB from your phone? Do you think the LG Double play would enhance your texting and posting capabilities?

Leave me a comment and let me know!

Blue Sky Scrubs Work to Make Your Day Brighter...

Manda is off looking for a new job. Every time she gets a new job she gets new clothes for said job. She shops here at http://www.blueskyscrubs.com/categories/Scrubs/Scrubs-for-Women, because she finds, comfort, fit, quality, style and price all in one place.

Manda works in the ER, but she isn't a doctor or a nurse. Still, she wears the uniform generally recognised as one a nurse or doctor might wear. She likes color and prints and cotton. I think she's probably one of the nicest dressed Med Rec Techs in her department. She has fancy lanyards, pretty pens and a bright green clipboard. I think Manda is strikingly beautiful when she goes to work.

Manda is not a morning person by any stretch of the imagination. One may think that would be a deficit for someone who starts work at 7am. In Manda's case it certainly is. However, when she gets on her pretty prints, and dons her flashy lanyards, her mood changes a little and she brightens up.

They say clothes make the woman. In Manda's case, clothes make the woman wake up a little. Clothes cheer her morning mood. And clothes absolutely make her co-workers take notice. She likes that.

The Steam Team - Austin: Refinishing Floors Nicely...

Five years ago, my cousin Jane bought a beautiful home in Austin. It had wall to wall carpeting in the living and dining rooms.Last year her husband Perry announced he was replacing the carpet. After taking it up, they discovered some water damage to an otherwise beautiful hardwood floor. Heartbroken but determined to save the floor, Jane searched the internet and found http://www.thesteamteam.com/austin-restoration-services/water-extraction.shtml.

After a simple search of  water damage hardwood austin, Jane found a company that specializes in the extraction, cleaning, repair or restoration of just about any kind of water damage; even very severe cases.More importantly, Jane found The Steam Team also refinishes hardwood floors. After a call, an expert estimate and a firm date to start the work, Jane and Perry set out to clear the rooms of all the furniture and draperies.

I spoke to Jane about a week after the floor refinishing was complete. She was putting the finishing touches to her dining room and was ready to put the living room back together. Jane told me the real challenge in the whole process was at hers and Perry's end. They not only had to move all their furniture, but then had to find places to put it all! Perry said he's very pleased with the work The Steam Team did refinishing his floor and it is beautiful, but he's tired! He wants Jane to stop redecorating, make him some lunch and sit in their beautiful dining room with him!

Steam at Edaville!

For the first time in 5 years, the #21 steam engine will run at Edaville!
It has been converted back to coal and will be chugging around the tracks this Christmas season. Last night, they took her out for a few runs around and hearing the whistle made me tear up just a little.
Stay tuned for pictures and video!

Entertaining with some stylish Thanksgiving decorations

Guest post written by Alexa Singer

'm a big believer in the whole entertaining experience. It's just so much more interesting when you're not only filling up on delicious food, but you're also taking in lots of attractive sights. I always like to keep my home decorated really nicely anyway, so it's only natural that I do it even more during the holidays. I'm hosting our extended family's vacation this year and I'm pulling out all of the stops for it.

I find a lot of inspiration for my decorations by looking online. When I was looking online not that long ago to find some cute decorations, I ran across some info on clear tv bundle packages and after that I decided to change over my home internet service to one of those packages.

Just part of my stylish Thanksgiving dŽcor includes some mini pumpkins that I'm using to decorate the dining room table. I also found some coordinating plates on sale a few months back that I knew would be perfect for a Thanksgiving celebration, so I got those to put out too.

Bil Keane - Part of My Family Circus...

Sad news. Bil Keane passed away yesterday.
Bil Keane wrote The Family Circus comic strip, a neat, fun and sometimes thought provoking comic.
My favorites were the ones where you  followed the dotted lines to see where the character had been and what they've done. I loved The Family Circus, mostly because I could understand it even before I could read. I loved looking at the pictures whether I could read the captions or not.
But I think the most notable thing about The Family Circus, aside from its basis on Keane's own family, is that Keane was a self taught cartoonist. I loved the minimal-ness of the drawings, the simple bodies and faces. As lean as they were, those pictures told a wonderful story with very little text. I know that is the whole idea of a cartoon, but to my mind, Bil Keane did it much better than most.
Good night, Mr Keane.

Women of Faith, Hartford November 11 - 12, 2011...

Women of Faith rolls into Hartford,Connecticut at the XL Center, November 11 and 12, 2011.

My friends from church talk about the amazing experiences they have each year at the Women of Faith conference. I've never been. I am intrigued though, so I'm going to take a ride down there and check it out.
I'm taking my friend Margaret with me and we get to camp out in a hotel room for a couple of nights and revel in the spectacle that is Women of Faith.

So, what is Women of Faith?
I asked the church ladies and I got different responses from all of them. Each lady had a different perspective and expectation of the event. I was most curious about what each of these women took with them from the event and how they apply what they learned to their daily lives. Not one of them could be completely specific. They told me stories dealing more with feelings and connections than with concrete facts. My church friends dealt with feelings of loss and despair, powerlessness and usefulness. They also experienced feelings of being uplifted, fulfilled and finding direction and encouragement, through women's groups, small group study and service to the community.
The Women of Faith conference absolutely connected my friends with other women who felt loss, despair or powerlessness. Each woman I spoke to revealed that they came away from Women of Faith encouraged to grow in their faith, spirituality and maturity through a personal relationship with Jesus and a fuller understanding of God's grace and love. While their daily trials and troubles were not instantly solved, each lady came home with hope, a fuller understanding of her role in her family, church and community and most importantly, a sense of peace.
I'm off to see what I can discover at Women of Faith. I'll be blogging and tweeting and probably facebooking.
Check me out!

Belts for Girls: Style Accentuated...

I was in the market the other night waiting to check out. The line was a little long so I picked up one of the celebrity mags to look over while I waited. I noticed that belts as fashion accessory occupied a whole page. The ones shown were big, wide belts positioned at the waist and worn with dresses. While belts are not only functional, they also serve to bring attention to a persons sense of style.

I favor jeans or slacks and so do most of the ladies and girls I know. The ladies like narrow, plain belts. Young women on the other hand go for style and snazz every time. Belts for girls are a hot item these days. Webbed, canvas, studded, leather, colors, braided, it's all out there. A belt is not only a classic way to accessorize, a belt is very personal and unique to the wearer.

The addition of a belt to an outfit can serve a number of purposes. The most obvious one is to showcase the personal flair or style of the person wearing it. A young lady often develops her style by copying what she sees in a fashion magazine or movie or television show. Professional costumers and stylists draw from many sources just a s a newly fashion conscious girl or woman does. Art, nature, family and community all contribute to fashion and style, and a belt brings an outfit together in more ways than one.

Untitled Jersey City Project - Looks Like Good Drama

This post brought to you by Untitled Jersey City Project. All opinions are 100% mine.
UNT_091311_Title_bmb_v01.ai (1 page)
I'm always looking for decent, compelling drama on television. I especially like shows that deal with  the personalities and relationships of the characters. In the Untitled Jersey City Project, I think I've found these things in spades.
It seems there's a new land development project in the works and a sexy little reporter called Jane has written a scathing feature about it. She meets with the men in charge of the project and tempers flare. Three days later, a flame ignites.
I'm intrigued. Take a look at this video and see if you agree that this looks like very interesting television.

I'll never wear a suit or be as thin and pretty as Jane. But I do want to see what those guys are up to and why Jane's piece in the paper has irked them so.  I  love to live vicariously through people on tv and in movies. I never have to watch my weight, get a manicure or a brazilian wax. Jane looks like a real pistol and someone actually gets pistol whipped by Larry! Is there a connection?  I'm dying to find out.
Watch the video yourself and please, leave me a comment with your thoughts. I really want to discuss what everyone thinks and if any of you would be interested in seeing more!

Sharing

Thanks for the guest post by Esteban Vinson

In all of the excitement that has come with moving to Atlanta, I have also found that there are adjustments that I have to make in order to live with two new roommates. I worked through the irritation that came when I found that my roommate Bethany and I woke up to shower before work at the same time everyday. I’ve gotten used to wiping down the stove and counters when I’ve literally never cooked in this house. I am in the process of learning to live with the television habits of my roommates. We subscribed to EXPERTsatellite, which offered us a plethora of channels and shows to choose from. I am not at all exaggerating when I say that my roommates’ and my taste in television are at opposite ends of the spectrum. I watch television for the primary purpose of being well-informed. I stick to CNN, Current, and C-SPAN. Bethany enjoys watching reruns of any types of sitcom, canned laughter and all. Susan watches only reality television, her favorite of which is Jersey Shore. It seems as though we’ve got a long road ahead of us, and we are currently exploring the idea of buying a second television.

Hill's Healthy Mobility Challenge

This post brought to you by Hills Pet Nutrition. All opinions are 100% mine.

Here at home, we've all gained a little weight over the last couple of years. It's definitely cut down my own mobility and our dog Penny suffers from decreased mobility as well. Penny also suffers other challenges, but she loves to walk and her mobility issues hinder her daily constitution. I've decided we are going to take the Hill's Healthy Mobility Challenge over the next 30 days.

Hill's Pet Nutrition was formulated to help dogs live an active life. A dog of any age can suffer mobility problems from joint pain or flexibility problems. In fact, 1 in 5 dogs suffer these maladies. Many people assume this is an unavoidable sign of aging. But early detection and awareness are the first steps to helping your dog age gracefully, with greater mobility and activity. If you notice your dog having a hard time getting up, or is slower on walks and doesn't recover from exercise very easily, your pooch may be suffering the early signs of joint health issues.

Hill's Science Diet Healthy Mobility Dog Food can help you get your dog back on track in 30 days. It has ingredients proven to help dogs with mobility. I am going to give it a try. I registered to receive  Hill's Healthy Mobility Coupon for $30 in savings. Penny really misses her walks and playtime and I want to do what I can to get us both back in shape. If you register now, you are also entered into a sweepstakes and 30 winners will win free pet food for a year!

Hill's Pet Nutrition on Facebook is a good place to read stories of other pets getting back in the game and living a healthy, more mobile lifestyle. Check out this link http://bit.ly/nh5LiQ, to learn more about healthy food for your pet.

Dogs, Kittens and Kids...

Well, Eugene has been here just over three weeks now. He is settling in very nicely, gaining back the weight he lost when he was lost and endearing himself to everyone in the house.
Last week our little neighbor, Anita, came over. She is almost as cute as Eugene and she loves him too. Sometimes too much. The day Anita was here it rained, so we played inside. Eugene and Nelle tried to hide were sleeping in a box of socks, but Anita found them woke them up.

Anita took all the socks out of the box much to the horror excitement of Nelle and Eugene.
Penny tried to get in on the game and found she was too big for the box.

Eugene tried to escape play a new game, but Anita insisted he play
"stay in the box". Penny and Nelle looked on in horror with great amusement.

In the end, only Penny was left. She was blamed for messing up the socks.

I Survived Hurricane Irene - I'm Good!

There's been no electricity at my house since 9am Sunday, August 28, 2011.

Things like this happened all over my town.

Yes, I am counting the days, But I'm also counting my blessings. My house still stands strong. My trees have a few small branches missing, but nothing big. I have access to water, showers, electricity for powering electronicals and internet here at church. I'm freezing ice in blocks for my coolers. No electricity at home is an inconvenience, not a hardship.

This is a hardship.

Some good has come of the electric-less house. No dishes have piled up. The trash is not overflowing. Stuff is pretty cleaned up. We go to bed at a reasonable hour. I think we are sleeping better without the distraction of tv.  The fridge will get washed out. The freezer has already defrosted.
I read a book and a half.

We will have to go out today to do some laundry. I don't mind. I have a bunch of stuff to do today and luckily the dump, the laundry, the garden shop(i have to water plants), and the grocery are all on the same street.
I can start at one end and go till my errands are finished at the other end.

LIFE IS GOOD!

Smile Generation- Help My Teeth Please!

My friend had three teeth out last week. The dentist told her there was no jaw bone left holding them in. I think I'm going to suffer the same fate. It's probably time to Find A Dentist. Since I love to eat and eating requires chewing and chewing requires teeth, it's time.

I remember as a child being terrified of the Dentist. The first one I ever went to was not very good with children and he not only scared the crap out of me, he was very mean to me as well. I remember sitting in the chair crying and calling for mother, who I could see through the doorway. The mean man did not allow her to come to my rescue. I give thanks for all of the dentists I've seen since then who were very good with people and never mean.

I'm in search of an affordable Family Dentist. I would really like to get into a practice that is run by a family. But if  I find a good fit at any sort of practice, I'll take a swing by and see if the Doctor can save my teeth from years of sheer neglect. On my part. Yes, shameful, I agree. And I am still a little scared. But the dentist I'm looking for will help me with that. I think it's called sodium pentothal.

Six Word Saturday - 08.27.11...

Stoopid Hurricane Irene, leave me alone.

In my experience if I prepare for a hurricane, nothing happens.
If I do nothing, the power goes out and I can't pump water.

That doesn't mean much till one tries to flush the toilet.

I've prepared, so wish me luck...

Carbonite Online Computer Backup - Easy and Inexpensive...

This post brought to you by Carbonite. All opinions are 100% mine.

Carbonite Online Backup

Not too long ago, I had a computer malfunction and lost a ton of fabulous pictures of my vacation and some great gardens in my yard. I looked into an external drive and didn't like the price. Besides that, an external drive can fail too. I thought it was too pricey to risk it. I've been looking into inexpensive computer backup ever since.

I think I've found what I've been looking for, with Carbonite and I don't have to worry anymore.

Carbonite automatically and continually backs up irreplaceable files like my pictures and music whenever my computer is connected to the internet. It can also back up email and documents. It works with a PC or a Mac and it can be accessed from any computer or Smartphone. You can be sure your files are safe because they are backed up to one of Carbonite's highly secure and state of the art data centers.

You can get Carbonite's online backup  for $59  a year. No credit card is required and if you try it free for 15 days, you get two months free by using the BLOGAD offer code when you decide to buy.

My pictures and my music are very important to me and losing them once was bad enough. I won't make that mistake twice.

Sprint Customers - Take Advantage of This Cool New App...

This post brought to you by Sprint. All opinions are 100% mine.
What would happen if you lost your phone? What if your phone was stolen? Chances are you wouldn't get it back and you may lose all your contacts and miss important calls or messages. If you’re a Sprint Total Protection subscriber you’re in luck! Sprint has a cool new app that will help you find a lost phone. But you have to act fast because the offer is only valid until August 30, 2011. The Sprint Total Equipment Protection App is an inexpensive way to protect your valuable phone.
Let me tell you more about this offer. Even if you didn’t enroll in the Total Equipment Plan (TEP) within 30 days of activating your phone, you can still take advantage of this great offer. The cost of TEP is $8 monthly and by adding it now during the open enrollment period, the Protection App is included at no additional cost.

The Protection App is really cool because it gives you the ability to locate a lost phone by sounding an alarm or you can locate the phone on a map with network integrated GPS technology. You can also lock a missing phone remotely and wirelessly sync, restore or manage your contacts. There is a $50 to $100 deductible if you need to file a claim to replace a phone, but that is far less than the retail cost to replace an Evo or the LG Optimus.
HTCEVOSHIFT_GCVS_settings menu.jpg (5 documents)
Sprint TEP gives you a way to fast and easy way to replace lost, stolen, or damaged phone even after the warranty expires. So this seems like a no-brainer to me. Summer doesn’t end for another month, but this offer will end on August 30th. So don’t take chances while you’re at the beach or the pool. You may want to take a dip but your phone doesn’t!
Learn more and enroll at www.tepenroll.com. And check out this video while you’re at it.

I asked some real TracFone customers about Tracfone and got some exciting answers! Interesting Visitor to the Garden...

I went out to my little garden the day before last and met up with this guy.
He was enjoying his lunch of fresh cricket.
I said have all the cricket you like, please leave the tomatoes alone.

This fellow hitched a ride from the greenhouses to the shop in Middleboro.
Upon arrival he told me he was having a late breakfast of stink bug.
(click the pictures to enlarge)

Help! I'm Lost!

I went to work in Middleboro for Gretchen today.
When I got out of the car I heard this sorrowful call.
It sounded like our kitten Nelle when she realises shes alone.
I looked around for awhile and decided it was a bird. So I commenced opening the shop, setting out the sandwich board and the wagons full o' flowers we put outside the gate. I put out the flags and dragged out the hose to start watering. I heard the sorry call again. I went looking again.
I saw the tail end of a tiny cat slip under the perennials.
I spent an hour searching and calling to him. I made Shawn come from Carver to help me find and catch him.
We weren't able to and Shawn went home.
I was guilt ridden. I worried the tiny cat got into the street or crossed the street and I'd never find him.
I didn't cry but I wanted to.
Later the guy next door came by and I mentioned it to him. He said he'd seen the tiny cat and left food out.
I felt better. I told him if he caught the cat, I would take him.

We're home now. Safe and sound.

Messy People and Pets Require Professional Help...

We not only have people living here, we have pets. Lots of 'em. We also have carpets. It's safe to say pets and people do a number on carpeting. They track in mud and dirt and there's the occasional accident. The accident could be anything from a pet stain to someone dropping a cup of soda. Either way that stuff leaves a mark and a stink. Both are unacceptable.

I don't want to clean carpets. It's difficult at best. Heavy, bulky steam cleaners work, but I just don't think I have the experience to do a very good job with stain and odor removal. I'm never sure if I'm operating the machine properly or if I've used too much cleaner in the machine. That in itself can lead to more problems later on.

So, I'm calling in The Steam Team to do the job for me. Check them out here, http://www.thesteamteam.com/austin-cleaning-services/upholstery.shtml. They do everything. Rugs, upholstery, drapes, you name it and they'll clean it. I want to leave the dirty work to the professionals and leaving the mess makers outside might do the trick too. I'll just corral the dog and the cats in the kitchen from now on.  I can mop up after them!

Green Technologies - Serious Solutions for Serious Problems...

My brother has been walking or riding a bike to work for years.Recently he purchased an electric car. He said he prefers to stay dry on the days it rains. My brother is committed to doing his part to find green solutions to everyday living. I would like to do the same and reduce the negative impact my family has on this planet.

I've been looking into Green Technology. I would love to be able to take my house off the grid and it's a project I've been thinking more about lately. Buying gas is killing me, not just the money I shell out at the pump, but from the results of burning gas in an internal combustion engine. I also contribute to carbon dioxide being released into the environment by using electricity that is generated in plants that burn coal, natural gas or oil.

Taking the house off the grid would mean spending money. The initial outlay would be substantial but not out of reach. In the long run I would be more conscious of how I use or misuse resources. By taking the house off the grid and spending less or no money on fossil fuels, would not only help my pocketbook, but show my neighbors and community that there would be no significant reduction in the quality of life here at home. It's time to get serious about reducing the negative impact humans have on our planet.

Share Your Dreams at the UPromise Dream Wall...

This is a Sponsored post written by me on behalf of UPromise. All opinions are 100% mine.
UPromise transforms little dreams into big realities!
We teach our kids every day of our lives. Manners, social customs and household chores are learned in addition to the things taught at school. A parent is the first teacher a child has and the most important one. When we teach our kids, we help them on the road to becoming the adults of the future. You probably have a dream for your child too, like a healthy body, a safe home and a college education. UPromise can help you and your child achieve the dreams of the future.
UPromise is giving away a boat load of money to parents who share a story about supporting their child's dream. This year UPromise celebrates their 10th anniversary! Over the past decade, UPromise members have received more than $600 million dollars in college saving through their rewards program. So in celebration, UPromise want to share all the ways they have helped to fuel the sparks that make kids and parents dream big and then realise those dreams.

Rock on people...

I was 8 when this show took place.

And unfortunately, I wasn't able to attend this festival. But it is my good fortune to be able to experience it on tv. Not as good as being there, but good enough. Click the link and you can see part of the spectacle too.

Trip on over to Cate's to see more SWS!
